Rearrest of Sowore during legal proceedings a bad omen for democracy – Engr. Adedeji Doherty

The newly elected Lagos state PDP Chairman, Engr. Adedeji has condemned the arrest and re- arrest of Sahara Reporter Publisher, Mr. Omoyele Sowore by the Department of State Security.

In a short statement released on Sunday by the Chairman through his media Aide, Engr. Doherty said “this is a bad omen for our nascent democracy- especially when this happened inside the court room in the presence of a presiding judge” He said this is something that has never happened in the history of Nigeria .

He believes that the Department of State security could have shown it’s exquisite professionalism by first inviting the accused, rather than the Gestapo style being introduced, Doherty also said that Nigeria, Nigerians and the international Community are watching our country very closely because from their bad experience regarding issues like this in other developing nations, which have continuously shown that the end result of such actions do not favor anyone including the perpetrators of such impunity.

The Chairman hereby calls for the immediate release of Mr. Sowore as he had been offered bail which he is entitled to as a human being and a Citizen of this country . The Court can decide what happens to Sowore thereafter.

The Chairman also said this Government can’t continue with this kind of attitude towards its people- especially the youths of this country, it’s consequence can only be imagined, our prayer is that the almighty God save us from experiencing the fall out of Governments impunity and disregard for the rule of Law .

Signed
Engr. Adedeji Doherty
