Reduce Politicians Salaries And Allowances Instead Of Increasing VAT – Emir Of Kano Tells Buhari

The rich would always desire to remain at the top. That is why they’re determined to kill or destroy anyone that tries to remove them from the comfort zone.

It’s no longer news that the Lawmakers have appropriated thirty thousand Naira (N30K) as minimum wage. But the greatest battle would be to get the Governors who are owing several months salary arrears of eighteen thousand (N18K) minimum wage to pay the new minimum wage.

The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has a better suggestion on the way forward. As an economist, he has seen the dangers of increasing VAT by 50% which will affect all the other areas of the economy. This would be tantamount to giving someone something on the left hand and at the same time withdrawing it on the right hand.

Presently, President Buhari’s total emoluments stand at fourteen million Naira (N14 million) while the Vice President’s total emoluments stand at twelve million (N12 million). The Senators earn thirty six million (N36 million) while House of Representative members earn twenty five million (N25 Million).

Mallam Sanusi Lamido suggested that it would be more appropriate for President Buhari and Osinbajo to slash their salaries by 50%. Looking at the organogram, it is not proper for lawmakers to earn higher than the President; hence something should be done to reverse the order. The Emir of Kano pointed out that increasing VAT by 50% signifies further impoverishing the poor masses; hence making the increase in minimum wage of no effects.
